Week 1 Writing Workshop

Transforming Experience into Story

Welcome, Authors

Over the past three days, you have explored your experiences, identity, and descriptive writing.

Today you will begin transforming those ideas into  personal narratives or graphic novel format.

Writers use stories to help readers understand who they are, what they have learned, and how experiences have shaped their lives.

Today, you will complete your name and neighborhood chapters.

Learning Targets

By the end of today, I can:

☐ Draft my  Name and Place Chapters

☐ Use figurative language

Use sensory details to bring my story to life

☐ Reflect on the meaning of my experience

☐ Give and receive feedback

☐ Revise my writing

Anthology Connection

⭐ Today you complete the first two chapters of your published anthology.

Your chapter will tell the story of an experience that helped shape who you are and what you have learned from it.

Step 1: Open Your Name Chapter Draft and Place Chapter Draft

Use your notes from Days 1–3 to begin writing.

Place Chapter Draft

Step 2: Draft Your Stories

Focus on:

• A meaningful experience

• Specific details

• Strong emotions

• Reflection and insight

Remember: Tell the story only you can tell.

Step 3: Exchange Feedback

Share your story with a partner and review their draft.

Use the Comment feature in Google Docs to leave feedback directly on your partner's writing.

Use the Glow, Grow, Question protocol.

🌟 Glow: What is working well?

🌱 Grow: What could be improved?

❓ Question: What would you like to know more about?

Step 4: Revise and Improve

Use feedback to strengthen your writing.

Strong writers revise.

Revision is where good writing becomes great writing.

Step 5: Submit Your Name and Place Chapters

When you are ready, submit your draft.

Reflection

What did you learn about yourself through this writing?

What part of your chapter are you most proud of?

What do you hope readers will learn about you?

Congratulations!

Today you began your journey as a published author.

Your story matters.

Your voice matters.

Your experiences matter.
